- Part-Time Summer Camp Counselor Positions for dates 6/30/25 - 8/25/25
Job description
Rhode Island Surf Co. is looking for 3 to 4 counselors to assist in leading a summer camp for the 2025 season. Two positions are being offered; Lead Counselors and Co-Counselors. This is a seasonal position; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday(Fridays if weather impacts a core session day). The camp is offered to ages 7-13, and runs from June 30th - August 25th, 2025. Lead Counselor will work both am and pm sessions in a week, this is 9am-12pm(morning) and 1pm-4pm(afternoon) with a break for lunch between sessions. The Lead Counselor is responsible for coordinating with Co-Counselors in following a provided “curriculum” to ensure an exciting, fun and safe experience. Co-Counselors will work either a morning or an afternoon shift for the entirety of a session. Co-Counselors have the opportunity to work more hours as available and will be offered more upon completion of extra certifications.
Requirements
- 18 Years or older to apply.
- Strong Communication, Decision making and a positive attitude at all times.
- Must be willing to take direction and not deviate from a set curriculum.
- Attention to detail and observational awareness.
- Enjoy being outside and living the beach life.
- Enjoy sharing your passion for the beach and beach life with children ages 7-11.
- Pass a government background check.(We will assist)
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.(We can assist in organizing certifications)
- State Surf lifeguard certification.(Not required, but the cost can be reimbursed if counselors completes a full season of Adventure Camp Counselor)
- Swimming, Surfing, Bodyboarding, Stand Up Paddling, Ocean and Coastal knowledge/experience will come in very helpful for successful counselors.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Showing up on time and ready to go(dressed appropriately and accordingly) for each shift.
- Understand and follow a directed curriculum designed to be fun, educational and engaging.
- An understanding of all equipment and its proper/safe use(surfboards, SUPs, bodyboards, etc.)
- Assist in setup and breakdown of camp and camp activities.
- Account for daily weather and always take safety into account FIRST.
- Ensure campers are properly hydrated and having a good experience.
- Engage with campers and keep everyone stoked!
- Practice and preach safety practices at all times to help steward better beach-goers.
- Checking kids in and out of camp with parents or “pre-designated pick-up person”
- Engage with and communicate with parents and pick ups and drop offs.
- Make sure liability, contact and all other pre-camp forms are filled out before the start of the session.
- Adhere to the standards set by Camp Manager; maturity, professionalism and positivity.
- Being reliable! Showing up to work and being accountable.
- Flexibility and availability to help the team cover schedule or weather conflicts
- Be acutely aware of where important waypoints are near camp. (Lifeguards, bathrooms, shade, first aid kits, emergency phones, etc.)
- Communicate effectively with co-workers in a professional, responsible and timely way
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a counselor to successfully perform the essential functions for this job. The counselors are frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The counselor may frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Much of the camp experience is in the water or on the water. A strong swimming ability and comfortability in the water is important. An ability to be outside for periods of time in variable summer weather conditions. The counselors should exemplify what it is to be a proficient and safe beach goer to all the campers. Counselors do as they say and say as they do.
Adventure Camp Mission:
This is an enrichment program, made for, and by people who love the ocean! The mission is to provide campers with exciting educational experiences; to teach practical water safety skills, and knowledge about our local beaches and the amazing ecology. Each camper will be a smarter, more confident and stronger beach-goer from participating in any one of the sessions offered.
