Issue No. 14 Summer 2026
When the boss is away, the kids come out to play. The truth is - we don’t know where Russ is. Honestly. Texts go unanswered and emails hang in the abyss. We think he’s off on another adventure with his son AJ, but we don’t know where for sure. Very much like the article in this issue written by Pete Cabrinha about a father-daughter bucket list trip to the Lofoten Islands where Pete gets to wing foil throughout the night under the pale dusk of a midnight sun that never quite sets. Yes, that’s a good one.
It’s also a bit like the article inside this magazine by Jen Murphy highlighting the talents, spirit of travel and dedication to self reflection of Bernd Roediger. We love that one too. Russ Scully is a reflective guy, living a life of mindfulness and meaning while also being a swiss army knife type of athlete chasing multiple watersports at once. Like Bernd, but different. We love Bernd.
Or maybe Russ’ disappearance is more like Paula Novotna and Chiara Socin’s spontaneous trip to Fiji featured herein in order to lose themselves in daily adventure governed by the tides and conditions to decide where and how they will foil that day. This one seems most likely. Russ and AJ (and god knows who else) have lost themselves in wing foiling off some remote coast somewhere and are so immersed in the moment, he’s forgotten to write his Publisher’s Note.
Speaking of remote locations (and Russ), the magazine in your hands also hosts the return of Jimmy Martinello, photographer, adventurer, waterman and pioneer. Jimmy and a select crew of able watermen took two trips to the outer beaches of Madagascar recently. The first trip, authored by Trevor McDonald, was an expedition/photography mission for an outdoor brand looking to build human connections with the local communities of these remote regions. Jimmy was so struck by the people and the culture (and the waves), that he pretty much turned around and went straight back to the Barren Islands to soak himself a bit more. We think this is possible for Russ too. Perhaps they might have been on their way back home … and decided to turn around for one more run. Totally possible.
Beyond that, the summer issue in your hands hosts an unforgettable profile on big wave surfers Alo Slebir and Luca Padua, their friendship, and recent trip to Ireland for the St. Patrick’s Day swell written by Dylan Stott. We also introduce a new contributor, Ashleigh Watson, to tell her tale of becoming a marine life photographer documenting the lives of whales while traveling around the world. We hope Russ comes back to read this one. We think he’s gonna like it.
Additionally, Jamie & Francesca Hockley give us deeper insight into the northeastern regions of Zanzibar viewed mostly from the water while flying their kites and downwinding from one town to the next. We hope Russ hasn’t gotten that far off the beaten path… but you never know.
All this, plus more are waiting for you within the pages of the Summer’ 26 issue. We hope you enjoy the slow turn of each page, the adventure that awaits around every corner and in every article. That’s what we do, as water athletes, turn the page, ride the tide and adventure around the next bend to see what’s out there. And, if you see Russ, let him know we’ve got this. He should stand down and continue doing what he’s doing, because that’s where we know he’s at his best.
Happy summer, everyone! See you in the swells.
Warmly,
Ev & Jeff
